Searching for Spanish success: K-PAX Racing ready for final GT Europe charge
K-PAX Racing tackles the final round of this year’s Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS Endurance Cup this weekend (September 29/October 1), taking place at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya in Spain.
The team and its trio of Lamborghini Squadra Corse Factory Drivers – Franck Perera, Sandy Mitchell, and Marco Mapelli – have performed well this season, running well in the top ten consistency, but have battled a string of unlucky moments which have denied the chance to record a deserved podium finish.
With just one final three-hour race to go, all will be working hard to pull off the very best result possible this time out – the first time K-PAX Racing has competed at the circuit. It is a different story for the drivers however, with all having repeat visits to the track – including a fourth place for Franck and victory in his title-winning campaign for Marco in 2019.
After unofficial test sessions on Friday, September 29th, the team will head out for Free Practice and Pre-Qualifying the following day, at 09:00 CEST (00:00 PST) and 13:25 (04:25). Qualifying is set for 09:45 (00:45) on Sunday, 1st October, with the race starting at 15:00 (06:00). Fans can enjoy live coverage of Sunday’s action on YouTube, via the GT World channel.
Sandy Mitchell
“Barcelona is a track that I like, and I’ve gone well at in the past, so I’m looking forward to going back there. We’ve gone well there in the Lambo before, and we now have the faster layout, which should be interesting because I’ve not raced on that one before. It’s always a nice place to round off the season. I don’t see why we can’t have a good result there. We’ve shown good pace in every race of the season so far, so if we can have another good qualifying session, and be in the mix in the top five, I think we can get a podium.”
Marco Mapelli
“Usually, Barcelona is a good circuit for both me and Lamborghini. We’ve won many championships there as it’s the last race of the season. I won the GT Open in 2017, in GT World Challenge in 2019 and we were on pole in 2021, so it is a track that I enjoy. We have a good car and hopefully we can fight for the win. All the ingredients are there, we have a strong driver line up and the team always perform at a high level, we just need a bit of luck on our side.”
Franck Perera
“I’m looking forward to Barcelona. I’ve had some good results there in the past and our performances all year have been strong it’s just the results haven’t gone our way. For sure we have a good package and the K-Pax team executed flawlessly at Nurburgring. We’ll give it everything to try and finish the season on a high.”
Darren Law – Program Manager
“We are looking forward to the final round of the season in Barcelona. We have unfinished business as our results haven’t equalled our performance this year, so we really hope to close out the season on a high note and get the result that the team deserve.”
